Equus Asinus – 1906 – for Bogey Magazine – by Ivan Bilibin – Etching – The context of this image is not clear, although judging by the style of the illustration and the background, it may be a reference to the philosopher, Jesus Christ, and the donkey that he rode on in the New Testament. There are still others that believe that the donkey itself was a manifestation of Jesus Christ, and the rider was a doppelganger of Christ.
