The 1956 book, “Pemmican” by Vardis Fisher is a tremendously entertaining roller-coaster of an adventure that tells the story of David Macdonald, a vigorous young fur trader from the Hudson Bay Company.
Its kill or be killed for any fur trader looking to earn a living in the business in the Hudson Bay territory in the year 1815. Rival trading companies were in a murderous feud for trading rights, and bloodthirsty Indians were scalping every white man in sight.
These and other perils such as freezing cold blizzards that could turn any man into an ice block and stampeding buffalo that would trample anything in their path make the life of a fur trader all the more eventful.
But for David, the prize was more than just the fur trade. He had seen a savage, wildly beautiful white girl in the Blackfoot camp, and he was determined to have her. All he had to do was tame her—and kill the Blackfoot chief who coveted her.
